Incarceration is detrimental to the physical and mental health of individuals.
Studies have found a significant effect on mental health starting at the time of initial police contact, and at each subsequent stage of the criminal justice process. This is greatly exacerbated by the stress of trial, the trauma of incarceration, and the separation from children and loved ones.
Black men bear the brunt of these issues that are further worsened by health inequities that cause their mental health needs to go unaddressed.
Those with pre-existing conditions face a cycle of incarceration due to an institution that is unable to acknowledge and support the needs of its population.
Jails and prisons are the largest providers of mental health services in Florida. Those that are facilitating the trauma should not be the ones treating it. That is where FLJC comes in.
How We Help
We strive to address the mental health needs of our clients. We offer a wide array of individual and group counseling services to help our clients successfully reintegrate into their communities and address new or existing mental health concerns.
Mental Health Services
We provide all treatment and counseling services onsite at our reentry facility in Oakland Park where we help our clients find peace of mind.
Our clinicians provide individualized service to help clients navigate through their individual needs. Our therapists work with clients and their case managers to identify needs, provide counseling services, create treatment plans, and routinely monitor their progress.
Some mental health services that we provide are:
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy
- Anger management
- Coping skills
Our goal is to ensure the well being of our clients and to instill coping mechanisms, and techniques, to help them thrive in their day-to-day lives.
Building and maintaining strong support systems are vital to reentry and recovery. The post-release support of family and friends is a crucial component on the road to wellness and reintegration.
At FLJC, we strive to foster strong familial relationships during our client’s reentry process.
Some of our family services include:
- Couples counseling
- Support groups for families of the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated.
