message from the executive director

Our strength comes from our passion for changing lives

Currently in the United States, there are more than 40,000 cannabis prisoners. Nearly 40% of all drug arrests are for simple possession of marijuana. By working together, we can greatly reduce these numbers.

As a founding sponsor of the Cannabis Justice Institute, you’ll further champion the fight against unjust incarceration while building racial equity in the criminal justice system. These are the bedrock principles of the Florida Justice Center, an organization I founded after serving a five year prison sentence. I know first-hand the barriers those with an arrest record face. Being a major player in the cannabis field, we know you can relate directly to our mission.

We need your support to create change.

I invite you to join me on this journey.

What we will do

Changing the Rules
Case law is decided by judges. By overturning previous rulings, we can limit police powers and decrease arrests.

Our lawyers would initially target two precedents: 1.Remove the ability of police to search a person or car due to the odor of cannabis. 2.Remove the use of cannabis as a violation of probation for those with a valid card.

Unite Reform Groups
There are many national cannabis reform and advocacy groups, and dozens in Florida. CJI will assemble regional taskforces so these organizations can collaborate and pool their knowledge and resources.

Form Advisory Board
Formation of an advisory board composed of influential members of the business, legal, entertainment, and legislative communities

Training and Assistance
CJI will work with prosecutors and police departments to increase the use of civil citations in lieu of arrests until full legalization is realized.

Sealing and Expunging Arrest Records
Clearing an arrest record is the easiest way to increase earning potential, employability, and housing opportunities.

Applying for Clemency
With a felony conviction comes a significant loss of rights. For drug-related arrests, the consequences are even more severe. We will help people apply for pardons, clemency, and voting rights restoration.

Vacating Convictions
By building relationships with prosecutors throughout the state, in many counties we can streamline petitions to vacate convictions for possession charges and give people a fresh start.

Benefits of sponsorship

Our goal is to provide influential companies like yours an opportunity to make an even greater impact in the community, while helping your clients.

Improve Diversity and Inclusion

There’s no denying that people of color are disproportionately affected by the criminal justice system. By sponsoring the Cannabis Justice Institute, you’ll create a more diverse talent pool in, and out of, the cannabis industry.

Build Brand Awareness

As a founding sponsor, your company logo and marketing materials will get increased exposure. This is a unique opportunity for you to gain an advantage over the competition. Your company will be prominently featured on the website, press releases, and event flyers.

Increase Access to Medical Cannabis

Our plan would significantly increase the number of medical cannabis card holders in the state. Cross promotion opportunities, such promotion of a special strain to benefit CJI are limitless.

Strengthen Your Network

Your involvement will open doors to industry leaders in cannabis, government, business, law, advocacy, and academia. You will be able to make important connections that can help grown not only your bottom line, but also your standing in the community.
