TRULIEVE AND FLJC PARTNER TO PROVIDE SECOND CHANCES IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES

Trulieve and FLJC Partner to Provide Second Chances in Underserved Communities

Organizations join forces to provide expungement, driver license reinstatement, clemency, and reentry support for Second Chance Month.

Quincy, FL (April 7, 2022) –

2 in 5 drug arrests are for personal possession of marijuana. The “War on Drugs” has decimated communities, particularly low-income neighborhoods of color that are disproportionately targeted by the criminal justice system. In some Florida counties, over half of those arrested for possession charges are Black. Florida Justice Center and Trulieve are working to fight these disparities and build better lives for those affected by the criminalization of cannabis through a series of free second chance legal clinics throughout the state that provide sealing and expungement, voting rights restoration and registration, driver license reinstatement, clemency, probation, and other services.

Along with numerous community partners, Florida Justice Center (FLJC) and Trulieve are setting up one-day second chance events that unite legal and social service providers in eight different cities, each with some of the highest cannabis arrest racial disparity rates. At each of the events, Florida’s first medical cannabis company, Trulieve, will be paying sealing and expungement fees for all qualified people.

The first event in the series was held on February 26, 2022, at the Historic Manhattan Casino Event Hall in St. Petersburg and drew nearly 200 community members seeking a fresh start.

Attendees will be able to meet with an attorney or social service provider and receive advice and assistance with:

  • Arrest record sealing and expungement
  • Reinstating suspended driver licenses
  • Voting rights restoration
  • Clemency application
  • Probation issues
  • Outstanding warrants
  • Free or reduced-fee medical cannabis evaluation and card
  • Civil legal issues such as: housing and evictions, immigration, child custody, government benefits, and more

“All of us at Florida Justice Center are dedicated to increasing access to justice by bringing our free legal services directly to underserved communities. We are excited to work with Trulieve to help Floridians overcome systemic barriers to success and to build racial equity in the justice system,” said FLJC Staff Attorney Zubin Kapadia.

“Our mission as a company has always been to improve people’s lives,” said Trulieve CEO Kim Rivers. “We’ve always been dedicated to improving the communities we call home.”
