FORT LAUDERDALE COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT EVENT TO HELP RETURNING CITIZENS RESTORE RIGHTS

Fort Lauderdale Community Empowerment Event to Help Returning Citizens Restore Rights

Florida Justice Center partners with Step Up! to teach justice-involved people how to take back power and change the system.

Fort Lauderdale, FL (May 5, 2022) –

Once arrested, an individual is marked for life as a criminal unless their record is sealed or expunged. In Florida, even if the charges are dropped the arrest remains on their background check. When convicted, the loss of rights is staggering: the inability to vote, to hold public office, to obtain professional licensing, or serve on a jury. Florida Justice Center is joining forces with Step Up!, a new reentry organization in Broward County, to provide a community education event to give those who have been impacted by the justice system a hand-up on success by teaching them how to regain the power they once had.

Community members, whether formerly incarcerated or just curious, are invited to attend on Saturday, May 7th from 11am to 2pm at Joseph C. Carter Park Community Center located at 1450 W. Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311.

Presented by Florida Justice Center’s attorneys and staff, participants will learn the definitions of various legal terms, how to qualify for rights restoration, and will be afforded the opportunity to apply for assistance. This is an amazing Second Chance Event that will help returning citizens and their loved ones help themselves. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and to privately discuss legal issues with attorneys.

Topics to be discussed will include:

  • Driver license reinstatement
  • Sealing and expungement of felony arrests
  • Voting rights restoration
  • Pardons and clemency
  • Firearms rights restoration
